YMCA-INDEPENDENT PE SYLLABUS

 

Culver Park High School and IAcademy’s Independent Study PE is a 5-credit per session course that includes the following activities, assignments and grading policies:

    1. ALL students must attend the YMCA-directed Monday class which includes:
      1. Run-walk to/from CPHS-YMCA accompanied by YMCA coaches
      2. Participate in a fitness activity at the YMCA
      3. Return to CPHS/IA
    2. If a student misses a session, the student must make up two-hours of a class or self-directed activity at the YMCA prior to the following Monday. Designated “make up slips” will be signed by YMCA personnel and handed in to R. Morris at CPHS/IA
    3. In addition to the YMCA-led sessions on Mondays, ALL students must complete an additional two hours of activity at the YMCA per week, for a total of twenty hours per session. YMCA personnel will sign off on a separate “additional hours completed” slip.
    4. All students participating in this program will receive a year (September 2015 to September 2016) FREE membership at the YMCA. The YMCA strongly encourages students to invite paying members to the YMCA with them!

  • ALL students will earn a C for 5 units of PE by attending all sessions and completing a written assignment about a sports event or dance activity, as well as keeping a weekly weight log and daily food intake form.

 

  1. Students may receive a B or A for their 5 units of PE by:
    1. Putting in more hours at the YMCA
    2. Participating in (and documenting) other physical activity over and above the YMCA sessions
    3. Attending field trips (when available/applicable) that involve watching and/or doing physical activity (for example, a dance performance.
    4. Attending CCHS after school sports events (football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, Lacrosse, etc.) and obtaining the signature of one of the CCHS PE Coaches on a written form you will complete.
    5. Other opportunities, as they arise, and to be determined via meeting with CPHS/IA administration/teachers.
  2. There will be three, ten-week, sessions through the year, as follows:
    1. 9/14-11/16
    2. 11/30-3/7
    3. 3/14-5/23
